Greetings!

So our Fall Menu is phased in! This menu is absolutely wonderful. Chef Jeff Smith (my lovely husband) is continuing his weekly pilgrimages to the Farmer’s Markets to procure as many local ingredients as he can for the menu. Andrew and Tina have added some great ideas, and have worked out some new preparations for dishes like the Lentil Salad with the wild mushroom leek custard, and the pan-seared Black Cod with clam oyster vichyssoise. When trying something off the beaten path such as the Sweetbreads or Rabbit, The Chameleon is the place to do so. I must have had 3 different sweetbread preparations before I found one I enjoyed, and it was from our kitchen!

Porterfield's "Hamilton" screening at the Parkside

Message from NOGLI president, Mark:

Baltimore's Neighborhood Design Center and NOGLI are partnering to present a screening of former Hamiltonian (and former Chameleon Cafe server) Matthew Porterfield's 2006 fictional feature film "Hamilton" at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, November 3rd, at the Parkside Restaurant at 4709 Harford Road.

NDC and NOGLI have long partnered on a variety of projects serving NOGLI's neighborhoods and this event was spearheaded by NDC as the sole citywide "appetizer event" for NDC's Annual Party on November 11th, at which Porterfield will be speaking about "The Power of Place."

The movie has been screened several times previously in the neighborhood but this screening offers those who haven't had a chance to see the film the opportunity to do so in the convivial environment of Parkside's backroom area.

This link (http://bit.ly/32x17Y) takes you to a good 2004 City Paper article on the movie from 2004. Note the closing paragraphs and the discussion of the support provided by Jeff, Brenda and The Chameleon Cafe in helping the filmaker/server obtain the funds needed to make

this film. Porterfield's newest film, "Putty Hill," is now in post production, with excerpts being shown at NDC's Annual Party.

The film will be introduced by brief comments from NDC Executive Director Mark Cameron and myself. Porterfield may attend, but commitments in New York may make that impossible.

This event is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there. I haven't seen the film but I have heard great things about it from folks far and wide.

Tuesday Market Vendor highlighted in the City Paper

Nikki from Mallow Munchies is featured in the City Paper, her first local press coverage. Nikki's Munchies have been a favorite at the Hamilton-Lauraville Tuesday Market, coming to a season end next Tuesday, October 27th. Packed with healthy ingredients, Mallow Munchies are a treat you can eat without tremendous guilt. If you didn't get to try them at the Tuesday Market, Nikki's Munchies can be found at Zeke's Coffee and Grind-On Cafe.

The City Paper's Erin Sullivan writes:

We've been seeing these big, blocky crispy-rice marshmallow things popping up all over the place lately--coffeehouses, farmer's markets, even at Graul's in Lutherville. And the only thing that has kept us from picking one up sooner is the sheer size--smaller than a breadbox sure, but about as large as a small loaf of zucchini bread. Now, we love us some Rice Crispy treats when they're homemade, but those brand-name ones in the shiny foil packets have that super-preserved chemically flavor that makes them kinda, well, suck. So we have been eager to try to Mallow Munchies, baked right here in Baltimore and made without any artificial flavors, chemicals, colors, or preservatives. Even the marshmallows are made from scratch. We picked one up recently at Grind On Café--we selected the Belgian chocolate dipped version, by the way ($5). It was certainly a far better choice than the brand-name option, but just like with any all-natural version of a chemically enriched original, we missed some of the bad-for-you-ness--we wanted more butter, more salt, maybe a bit more of that gooey, stickiness that we associate with melting marshmallows. But that's not to say we don't appreciate and enjoy the more grownup Mallow Munchie--we do. And we did. As in, ate almost the whole thing in one sitting. Yikes.

And devour we must. Breakfast—served until 2 p.m. on weekends—is not fussy. Most offerings have ingredients that can be counted on one hand (eggs, onions, potatoes, cheese) and are served best with a steaming cup of Zeke's coffee. The homemade hot sauce—just ask the waitresses—adds just the right kick to the casseroles, scrambles, egg sandwiches, and cheese grits ($3.50). (We've even considered adding it to the French toast—we love it so.) This Hamilton restaurant is also part charcuterie, and the house-made smoked duck sausage ($3.50 for two) leaves you counting the days until the next weekend. The restaurant itself is quaint and hip with lots of great art on the walls and a relaxed vibe.

Did you hear this morning's Radio Kitchen on WYBR 88.1 fm?

If you did, you would have heard Hamilton's own Winston Blick, the chef and owner of Clementine, talking about his yummy Duroc Charcuterie.

From the Radio Kitchen website:

One of the true joys of life is discovering that someone has opened up a new restaurant in your neighborhood. Up in northeast Baltimore, in Al's part of town a new sport [sic] called Clementine's [sic]has been packing them in for several months now. One of the secrets to Clementine's success is the delicious cured and smoked meats they serve. The French call it Charcouterie, Winston gave it the brand name Duroc, but we just call it delicious.

Husband and wife Cristin Dadant and Winston Blick own Clementine's. Winston is the chef and meat man while Cristin runs the front of the house. Charcouterie, as practiced by a chef-owner, is something of a lost art. But once Winston perfected his technique and realized how creative he could be, pates, rillettes, sausage and cured meat began showing up all over his recipes. A great way to sample his wares is to order the Charcouterie Plate as an appetizer and dig in. Word has it that in the near future you will be able to purchase Duroc products over the counter, right at the restaurant.

Yummy fall items are making their way on to our café lunch menu. Grilled cheese with spicy apple butter and bacon (or not), yam apple soup, our ever delicious Red Canoe wrap with roasted pecan pesto, sun dried cranberries and roasted turkey…cheese and apple chutney melt, a roast beef pepper jack melt on rye bread…oh yeah, all good, all the time.

Our coffee is still Zeke’s served hot fresh and delicious every day and especially in the morning—with a sweet or savory muffin, with a toasted English muffin slathered with melted cheese, fluffy eggs, bacon…a delicious breakfast burrito –have you tried the Cajun remoulade yet?

Closing of Harford Road Senior Center on Fox 45 News

From Fox 45 News:

A northeast Baltimore senior center is shutting its doors after more than three decades, but many people say the center is their second home.

The city can no longer afford to give the Harford Senior Center nearly $100,000 each year and plans to close the facility at the end of the month.

The center helps more than 400 nearby residents who say they want city officials to reconsider.

Dance Academy Grand Opening Gala on Harford Rd (Hamilton 21214)

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Performing Arts, celebrated their grand opening with 'A Night in Hamilton' gala at the Center, 5543 Harford Road, Baltimore 21214.

A great time was had by all who attended. Auctioned prizes, dance instruction, music, artwork, neighbors and great food helped make the evening a success. Working hard and swift, the owners of MCPA, Kristen Hernandez and Shannon Torres, outfitted the building, helped promote their fellow business owners, hosted ballerina tea parties for young dancers, welcomed the community to their performance space and held a wonderful opening gala.

'Ninotchka' continues film series (Lauraville)

The Donovan Fund Film Series

One Saturday a month, people gather to enjoy a classic film to benefit the Donovan Fund. Recent selections have included Buffalo Soldiers, An Affair to Remember and The Informer. The money raised from ticket sales goes to help low-income senior citizens handle emergency situations.

This Saturday, September 12, 2009 is the showing of the 1939 commedy classic Ninotchka, on hour of Greta Garbo's birthday.

There may have been others, but we cannot be sure about who the others may be (unfortunately) becuase people are always chipping in to help out. For ten years, Linda Secor walked across the street from her Lutherville home to work at her gift shop, Sweet Annie Ice Cream and Gifts. But when her lease ran out in May, Secor decided the high Lutherville rents weren’t for her anymore. She’d heard about the revitalization of Hamilton’s main street from a colleague, she says, and was interested in being part of the action. So in June, she headed over the city/county line and opened up (sans the ice cream) as The Heart of Hamilton (5523 Harford Rd.; 443-627-8769). The store, fronted by two wide, sunlit display windows, carries much of the same as her Lutherville location—scented candles, purses, cheerful flowerpots, and items for kids and babies. Just about everything falls into the $10 to $20 range, and Secor offers free gift-wrapping. Even in hard times, affordable presents will always find a market, she says. “People are still buying gifts. I’m optimistic.”

The 5400-5500 blocks of Harford Road hosts beer from Brewer’s Art and Flying Dog, a pie eating contest, the performing antics of aminibigcircus, and classic cars; plus music from BDK, ellen cherry, Sal Bando, Kenny and Cris, Trace Blam, Honkey Knog, Puddle, Lafayette Gilchrist, St. Veroniica's Youth Stell Orchestra, Jeremiah Clark and the Broken Band, Underground Sound, the Expotentials, Muscle Twin, T.T. Tucker, the Beltways, and Rodney Henry.

Although the Hamilton area is looking fresh these days on account of local eateries sprouting up and thriving along it's main corridor, this weekend brings the 16th annual street festival celebrating the community and the local car culture. Highlights include beer from Brewer’s Art and Flying Dog, a pie-eating contest, the performing antics of aminibigcircus, and classic cars, natch. Dancing in the street provided by non-stop line-ups on two stages. Don't miss ms.ellen cherry at 1 p.m. and Lafayette Gilchrist at 7 p.m. on the Hamilton Stage and a strong finish by T.T. Tucker, the Beltways, and Rodney Henry hour by hour starting after 5 on the Gibbons Stage.

Whether it's Fells Point or Federal Hill, Baltimore has long been known for its great historic neighborhoods. One of the most popular is Lauraville, a hilly, early-20th-century streetcar suburb that was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to report that I got my first facial with Lisa's new compatriot at the Chop Shop, Sarah, yesterday. It was *wonderful.* She was professional, didn't push a lot of expensive products, used natural products that didn't give me a rash, and offered some advice...when I asked (as opposed to the scolding and/or judgmental "well, you really shoulds..." that we often get from those working on our skin). I was completely comfortable throughout and left feeling refreshed. I highly recommend Sarah! I used to go into Towson for the occassional facial, and now I'm happy to say that I won't be leaving the neighborhood for yet another service!
