THE REFUGEES

Opening: Beggar's Ride

Tickets $20.00 ~ Showtime 8:00 pm

Cindy Bullens, Deborah Holland and Wendy Waldman carved out terrific solo music careers. But when they joined forces in 2007 as The Refugees, they found a new home in harmony. Their debut CD, 'Unbound,' weaves harmonies as tight and elegant as fine linen - easy to dress up for the a cappella sophistication of "Save the Best for Last" and easy to dress down for a kickin' night of "Fishin' in the Dark." Their tapestry of sound blends folk, country, roots, blues and rock, sure to please fans of each genre. Cindy Bullens got her start as a backup singer for Elton John and sang on the best-selling "Grease" soundtrack; Deborah Holland was the lead singer/songwriter for the underground band Animal Logic; and Wendy Waldman wrote "Save the Best for Last," which became a huge hit for Vanessa Williams. The Refugees emerged on the music scene as a verifiably unmatched force of talent, diversity, and experience. and have been wowing audiences, radio DJs, and music critics alike with their soaring harmonies, indelible musicianship, and unforgettably humorous stage presence. Individually, The Refugeeshave logged more than three decades in the industry, with nineteen solo albums and multiple Grammy Award nominations to their credit, featuring musical styles that blend country, rock, folk, and Americana. To describe them as eclectic would be an understatement. These three women have utilized their intense drive and relentless passions to create an entirely new sound. "The Refugees offer up a terrific combination of engaging, passionate, and poetic songwriting, high-caliber musicianship, and gorgeous vocals. The combined musical pedigree of Cindy Bullens,Deborah Holland, and Wendy Waldman is unparalleled. Don't even think about missing an opportunity to catch them in concert." ~ Anil Prasadfrom Innerviews, Guitar Player and Bass Player.

"Beggar's Ride have something special. Yes, they have beautiful voices and beautiful harmonies, but they offer much more. Their heartfelt lyrics and melodies are at times haunting yet uplifting. They sing songs about real life and real people..............." -Art Wachter, Host of The Folk Show on NPR affiliate WPSU (State College, PA). Beggar’s Ride is the Baltimore based duo of performing songwriters Claudia SanSoucie andKate Maguire. They met in the fall of 2008 and began performing together soon after, officially formingBeggar’s Ride in the winter of 2010. Their efforts have culminated in the recording of their first full length album, Beggar’s Ride, released this past June. "...an album of gorgeous vocal harmony and Maguire’s flawless guitar work...the album has beauty in spades, it’s a quiet, moody affair..." - Jon Patton, Driftwood Magazine.

Harford Road Zombie Crawl October 22

Harford Road Zombie Crawl

Searching for ghouls is fun, but dressing and acting like one could be the ultimate Halloween drinking experience.

On Saturday, bar-crawlers, dressed as zombies, will do just that, creepily stalking Harford Road as if they're hoping to land a role on the TV show "The Walking Dead."

Rik and Shannon Marshall, a couple of Halloween enthusiasts, started the Harford Road Zombie Crawl in 2009 after a disappointing crawl downtown. It was their response to underwhelming drink specials and typical costumes ("too many people dressed as Superman and Chewbacca," Rik wrote in an email). Another perk: a non-sponsored crawl would give the zombies control in how much they spend.

The Marshalls were nervous on the Crawl's inaugural night, mostly because of rain, but they were pleasantly surprised to find zombies waiting for them at Koco's Pub. The group eventually swelled to 30. The turn-out doubled the next year.

The couple hopes this year's crawl — which kicks off at Koco's Pub at 8 p.m. — continues the trend.

"To be honest, it's just so much fun walking down the street, dressed as (and acting like!) a zombie, and scaring (amusing?) all the motorists and residents as we go," Rik says.

The Harford Road Zombie Crawl meets at Koco's Pub, 4301 Harford Road, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Drinks are not included. Free.
