March 8th Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at Episcopal Church of the Messiah

PANCAKE SUPPER FOR SHROVE TUESDAY

Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011

Time: 5:30 pm- 8:00 pm

Where: Episcopal Church of the Messiah

5801 Harford Road-the corner of Harford Road and White Avenue

Price: $5.00 for adults and children 11 and over

$3.00 for children 6 to 10

A little history about where this feast began.

“Shrove Tuesday occurs the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Traditionally viewed as a day of repentance, Shrove Tuesday has become the last day for celebration and feasting before the period of fasting during the Lenten season. Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. As in contemporary times, food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days.”

"Pancakes and doughnuts are associated with the day  because they were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar."
Please feel free to contact Laurie Blackwell, at 410-818-4463, if you have any questions or would like to purchase tickets in advance! There will be tickets available at the door.

The film was an international co-production between production companies in Brazil, France and Italy.

The film is particularly renowned for its soundtrack by two Brazilian composers: Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose song "A felicidade" opens the film; and Luiz Bonfá, whose "Manhã de Carnaval" and "Samba of Orpheus" have become bossa nova classics.

March 5th Book Release, Poetry Reading @ Charmed Life Studios

Book Release and Poetry Reading

Touch

By Virginia Crawford

March 5th, 2011
6:00PM to 10:00PM

Charmed Life Studios
4505 Harford Road
Baltimore, MD 21214
(804) 854-5548

Charmed Life Studio is moving beyond the visual arts, and into the fast paced world of book signings and poetry reading. We will be the hosting the second stop in Virginia Crawford’s book tour, celebrating the release of her first solo book, Touch, published by Finishing Line Press. It’s a poetry reading. It’s a book signing. There’s going to be live music provided by Jennifer Parde. There will also be complimentary food and beverage provided by Virginia Crawford. It’s all happening March 5th starting at 6:00PM and ending at 10:00PM.

These poems serve as a meditation on what it means to be broken open by love. Touch aims to
help us open the curtain and raise up that good and human face – the one we all share, the one
that hungers for luminosity.

Michael S. Glaser, Poet Laureate of Maryland 2004-2009,
Professor Emeritus, St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Jennifer Parde is a singer-songwriter/pianist living in the Baltimore area. Jennifer majored in Jazz at Goucher College, and was a student of the late Pam Bricker. Recently, Jennifer has been singing with the Mood Swings Big Band and playing keyboards for the folk-rock group Midway Fair. Jennifer is currently revitalizing her solo career, and has one self-produced solo album, entitled "Natural Surreality".

Born in Baltimore City, Virginia Crawford is a graduate of Emerson College, Boston and the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.
