Save the Date for Greater Lauraville Fair: September 25, 2010

To all our friends and neighbors in Greater Lauraville,

This is just a quick note to let you know that once again we are gearing up for another Greater Lauraville Fair. This year we will have some very unique attractions for you, the first of which is a screening of a film from our local director turned Baltimore hero Matt Porterfield. He will be showing a tape looped version of his film Hamilton continually all day. We are going to have an eclectic mix of Musical talents, an array of local artisans and crafts people and as always local food treats. Molly’s kid’s area will once again be the toast of the younger set. The neighborhood associations will also be there to catch you up on the events of the past year. We are also arranging for MICA sculpture students and faculty to have some of their work on display.

Save the date September 25th, 2010, the last Saturday of the month, and only because we have learned from history we will have a rain date of the following Saturday if necessary.

Please email me with any questions or comment
greaterlauravillefair@Yahoo.com

Thanks again for our great community and all our fantastic neighbors look forward to seeing all of you there.

Will's Hairstyling named "Top Neighborhood Dad"

Will Colhouer, owner of Will's Hairstyling Shop at 5121 Harford Road in Lauraville, was named as one of "Baltimore's Top Neighborhood Dads." Will was nominated by the Waltherson Improvement Association.

The award was presented by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Thursday, June 17th at the Baltimore Rowing & Resource Center.

Quote from Mayor: Four years ago, I launched the "Baltimore's Top Neighborhood Dads" contest as part of an ongoing effort to refocus the City's resources and energy to our neighborhoods. Last month, it gave me great pleasure to recognize Baltimore's Top Moms. This afternoon, it is a privilege to honor dedicated men who have given selflessly to keep Baltimore's neighborhoods Better, Safer, and Stronger.

I say this having grown up the daughter of a famous fighter, someone who never backed down if he thought he was right: Pete Rawlings. My father spent his whole professional career in service to this City, demanding accountability and striving for excellence. His legacy - a public servant until his final days - is with me each day I step into City Hall.

- Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

Congratulations, Will!

Hamilton Beekeeper keeps Clementine in the honey!

Clementine is keepin' it local! With honey, that is. Purchasing fresh raw honey from a Hamilton neighborhood bee-keeper is yet another way that local residents & local restaurant owners are able to work together. Seen in these pictures, the beekeeper smokes the bees from the nest, checks for honey in each nest and harvests the honeycomb.

Some bee facts:
  • Queen bees have a life span of about 2-5 years.
  • Drones, male bees, live 40-50 days.
  • Most bees are workers, female bees who make honey & sting in defense. They live 1-4 months.
  • A bee grows from an egg to an adult worker in 21 days.
  • Queens lay thousands of eggs in the warm summer months.

Argonne Drive Bridge in Lauraville

All photos by Regina Lansinger, HLMS

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Congressman Sarbanes visited the construction site of the Argonne bridge this morning. This is a $7,000,000 shovel-ready job that is funded entirely through Federal stimulus money. The Argonne Drive Bridge, which crosses over Herring Run west of Harford Road, is now closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic for emergency repair work. The Department of Transportation with the help of American Infrastructure, is in the process of rehabilitating the Argonne Drive bridge.
