Mayor Sheila Dixon, Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and many others will join residents of Lauraville on Thursday, July 16th at 3 pm to celebrate This Old House’s honoring of Lauraville as The Best Place in Maryland to Buy an Old House.

THIS OLD HOUSE PARTY begins on the front porch of Robert and Mary Thuman’s beautiful Lauraville residence at 2905 Rueckert Avenue, restored with loan support from Baltimore’s Healthy Neighborhoods, Inc. program with an award presentation; comments from elected
officials, HNI, and others; and more than a dash of Lauraville funkiness. The party continues immediately afterwards in the wonderful just-opened-this-week bar and restaurant expansion space of Clementine, nearby at 5402 Harford Road.

“This honor is a confirmation of what we’ve known for years,” said Kenneth Lockie, President of the Lauraville Improvement Association. “This is a pat on the back for all the organizations and individuals who have worked so tirelessly to make Lauraville what it is today.”

“We’ve got what are simply the best affordable single-family homes in all of Baltimore,” said Mark Tough, Executive Director of the Neighborhoods of Greater Lauraville, Inc. “We’re green, we’re funky, we’re family friendly. We’ve got awesome local businesses like Chameleon CafĂ©, Clementine, Zeke’s Coffee, the Red Canoe Bookstore—and that’s just the beginning. This celebration’s going to be pretty cool.

Did I mention the pulled pork, slaw and corn at Clementine? Mmmmmmm.”

THIS OLD HOUSE PARTY is being hosted by the Neighborhoods of Greater Lauraville, Inc. and the Lauraville Improvement Association thanks to the generous co-sponsorship of PNC Bank.

Lauraville - 'A Leafy Paradise' by This Old House

Lauraville, Baltimore, Maryland

Whether it's Fells Point or Federal Hill, Baltimore has long been known for its great historic neighborhoods. One of the most popular is Lauraville, a hilly, early-20th-century streetcar suburb that was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. A short drive from downtown, Lauraville is a leafy paradise studded with hefty framed and shingled homes with full-length front porches and large front lots. While downtown is not far, many take care of their shopping needs by walking up to Harford Road, which has enough groceries, restaurants, and coffee shops to make getting in the car unnecessary.

The Houses
Lauraville has a combination of Colonial Revivals, Foursquares, bungalows, and Victorian-era homes, many of which have their original millwork inside and their shingle siding outside. Some single-family homes that were carved up into multifamily units are being returned to their original floor plans. Prices run between $175,000 and $250,000.

Why Buy Now?
Buyers looking to restore homes in Lauraville can take advantage of various tax breaks as well as loan programs provided by Baltimore's Healthy Neighborhoods, Inc. Combined, these incentives can save you thousands on your work. Those looking to restore older buildings in the area to use as small businesses might also qualify for tax breaks.

There are wonderful restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques now open in the area, with more to come. The community support in Hamilton has been wonderful, and we are looking forward to being a part of the thriving art and music scene in the neighborhood!

We are excited about our new expanded adult program starting this summer! We will be offering beginning classes in ballet, jazz, and tap, as well as a fun hip-hop class. We are also offering intermediate level, 90 minute classes in ballet and jazz. These classes are perfect for adults with experience, especially college age students!

Resident Recommendation: Chop Shop

A resident's recommendation of Lauraville's Chop Shop!

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to report that I got my first facial with Lisa's new compatriot at the Chop Shop, Sarah, yesterday. It was *wonderful.* She was professional, didn't push a lot of expensive products, used natural products that didn't give me a rash, and offered some advice...when I asked (as opposed to the scolding and/or judgmental "well, you really shoulds..." that we often get from those working on our skin). I was completely comfortable throughout and left feeling refreshed. I highly recommend Sarah! I used to go into Towson for the occassional facial, and now I'm happy to say that I won't be leaving the neighborhood for yet another service!

Please vote for Red Canoe as the Best in Baltimore

Nickelodeon's Parents Connect website has nominated RED CANOE as a candidate for Best Baltimore Bookstore for children. Current voting is running neck and neck with another bookstore, but you can help RED CANOE by voting (once every day per computer for the next sixteen days!) at:

http://gocitykids.parentsconnect.com/parents-picks/baltimore-md-usa/best-baltimore-book-store

Ballot stuffing is encouraged (Nickelodeon wants more website traffic after all) and this would be a great honor for both RED CANOE and the neighborhoods that support it. So vote today, vote tomorrow, and keep voting through something like July 14th!
