Dark Matter: artworks by Annie Farrar

Statement 
In my most recent body of work I use materials from daily life, objects that have cultural associations and points of reference for viewers. I explore the tension between the cerebral concerns of minimalism and an investigation of humanity: emotional, spiritual, symbolic, and narrative. At its core, the work is a meditation on entropy, time, loss, decay, renewal, and survival.

 My background in painting informs my interest in the materiality of paint and how its physical properties can be explored beyond two dimensions. The artwork changes with time; it is a mirror that invites viewers to consider their own mortality. Materials off-gas, break down and decay, just as our own bodies do. I ask the viewer to feel raw and vulnerable and to delve into their own emotional landscapes.

Bio
Annie Farrar was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Nashville, Tennessee. She earned her BFA in Painting in 2004 from the Maryland Institute College of Art and her MA in Museum Studies in 2009 from the George Washington University. Annie is a Baltimore artist whose process-oriented work is a meditation on decay and renewal. She has exhibited throughout the east coast and southern United States.

IONA’s music is a unique, acoustic weave of the traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany (France), the Isle of Man, Asturies and Galicia (Spain), as well as their transplants in America. Blending songs, dance tunes, and aires into a rich and stunning tapestry, their style is outstanding in an arena where these traditions are seldom intertwined. Conceived in 1986, IONA was the musical offspring of lead singer, bouzouki, guitar and bodhrán player Barbara Ryan and wind section,Bernard Argent. With fiddler Jim Queen (banjo and vocals as well) and bass guitar player Chuck Lawhorn, IONA has become the leading Celtic group in the Mid-Atlantic region. They are all seasoned performers: entertainers who involve their audiences with the history and cultural backgrounds of the music, with teaching words to the songs — even those sung in a Celtic tongue, with leading simple Breton dances, with humor, and with every emotion in the spectrum. Traditional Celtic material, haunting songs, toe tapping dances and the humor of the Celtic peoples from Scotland to Brittany provide IONA with an incredibly varied repertoire.

Original acoustic arrangements all the members of the band play several instruments, often switching within a piece to achieve their unique sound. They weave tunes from different countries around their songs, pursuing complex rhythms with deft professionalism.

Barbara Ryan’s voice has been described as “smooth and sweet as dark honey.” A folk singer in the 60’s, she studied voice for 10 years, and has been a vocal coach ever since.

Bernard Argent is IONA’s charming historian and yarn spinner. He studied music through much of his youth and at university in England.

Chuck Lawhorn, IONA’s bassist, not only owns just about every bass guitar conceived by mankind, but plays them all expertly. He also dabbles in whistle and sings a mean tenor harmony with the group.

Jim Queen comes to IONA as a veteran of 30 years performing with the Air Force Band. Master of many instruments, his primary contributions are fiddle and vocals, although he brings a touch of banjo and guitar to the mix as well. He’s performed all over the world and in just about every state, for presidents, heads of state and luminaries in every field.

Dancer Kathleen Larrick will be joining IONA for this performance.

Arts & Ideas Sudbury School is back in Hamilton!

Arts & Ideas Sudbury School, the only democratic school in Baltimore, is happy to be back home with friends in Hamilton for a year while looking for their forever home. The school, founded by two professors from the neighborhood of Arcadia, spent last year in Mt. Washington where it had moved to find room to grow.  The aging St. John's building, where the school was located, went on the market in June and the school community voted to return to the Church of the Messiah.  Arts & Ideas, a school for students ages 5 to 18, opened in 2008 and spent its first five years at the Harford and White location. It is one of two Sudbury Schools in Maryland. The Sudbury model of education was started in 1968 in Framingham, MA.  Arts & Ideas currently has 48 students, which is near capacity at the Messiah location, so the school is continuing its search for a location where it can grow and put down long-term roots. The school community will vote on a location later this year, and students are part of the decision-making process. Meanwhile, Arts & Ideas is happy to be back at the beautiful Messiah location that we enjoyed for so many years. 

Upcoming Open Houses for learning more about Arts & Ideas and the Sudbury model of education: November 8, January 10, February 7 and April 11 from 11:00 to 2:00.

Re:   Get on Your Dancing Shoes:  Local Music Series begins in Northeast Baltimore 

The North by Northeast American Roots Music Series, a showcase for unique local musicians, starts Saturday night, November 8, with the hip-shaking, ear-tingling rhythm/blues/funk of Baltimore's veteran party band, The (Shameless) Mooks -- along with the guitar-and-blues harp duo Patapsco Delta Boys, who play from the catalogue of blues, rags, jugband music, early country, early jazz and mountain music -- plus original songs in those traditions. 

This show is the first of six monthly events* planned at The Church of the Messiah, 5801 Harford Road in Hamilton, NE Baltimore City. 

Doors open at 8:00 PM and the music goes to 11:30 PM.

This is a family-friendly event in Northeast Baltimore. Admission is $10, and $5 for kids 10 years old and under. Refreshments: BYOB; hot food, pie, and non-alcoholic beverages will be on sale.

And don't worry, there really is a lot of free parking, both at the church lot (off White Ave.) and on Harford Road. We want you to have a good time. 

* Future shows include The Stone Hill All-Stars (December) and Boister (January).

Inspiration is where you find it — and where it finds you. Open to every moment, the much-traveled married duo of Pete and Maura Kennedy have spun their personal experiences, musical influences and philosophical beliefs into nine previous albums of winsome original songs, frequently seasoned with exquisitely-performed cover tunes, that blend acoustic-based folk, rock, country, pop and secular gospel into an inclusively delightful sound that’s all their own. The Kennedys use their full palette of vocal and instrumental colors to bring their songs to glowing life. Maura’s lead vocals range from comforting to yearning, from girlish to womanly, from exuberant to delicate, sometimes bolstered by her own sweet harmonies and those of Pete and sometimes several guests. As usual, multi-instrumentalist Pete provides a vibrant tapestry of chiming, jangling and twanging guitars, as well as mandolin, interwoven withMaura’s sturdy acoustic rhythm guitar, harmonica and glockenspiel. The body of work The Kennedys have created since their 1994 wedding is a reflection of their musical and philosophical influences and experiences separately and as a couple. Their live show and CD’s encompass their favorite musical styles while incorporating the naturalistic, transcendental and mythological teachings of Joseph Campbell, Eckhart Tolle, Walt Whitman, and various Eastern-oriented philosophers into their songs and lives. Their goal is to live in the moment, appreciating every second of sensation, which imbues their music with a constant sense of wonder and freshness. With the release of their tenth CD as The Kennedys and recent CDs by their Strangelings and Stringbusters side projects added to their discography, Pete and Maura remain the Energizer bunnies of the folk/rock world.

Kipyn Martin

Kipyn Martin is an emerging Mid-Atlantic singer/songwriter whose roots sink into the banks of the Shenandoah River. Her voice is gathering a reputation in the region, hailed by listeners as “an instrument of unrefined purity” ~ Tony S.- Leicester Bangs and “the most pure voice I’ve ever heard” ~ Karin Fuller- The Charleston Gazette. In February 2013 Kipyn celebrated the release of her debut album, Undercover Muse offering an authentic representation of Kipyns live performance. Placing in the New Song Academy Songwriting Competition inspired Kipyn to pursue a Master of Music degree which she attained from Shenandoah Conservatory in 2012. Most recently her song, “Nightbird” earned a gold medal, as well as the Director’s Choice Award, in the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest. She also received international distinction in the 2013 UK Song Contest when “I Believe in You” from Undercover Muse earned a semi-finalist rating. An honesty and vitality of voice make this woman a performing artist not to be missed.
