Hamilton Gallery Guest Series: Luis Alberto Rodriguez Colome

Guest Artist Series

Luis Alberto Rodriguez Colome

Luis Alberto Rodriguez Colome was born in Mexico City to parents fully engaged in the arts. He began to paint at age 13 as his artistic exploration and as a way to make money, but it quickly became his passion. As a young adult, Luis Alberto ventured into Europe with little in his pockets; it was his paintings that enabled him to travel around Europe, where he had the opportunity to meet new artists and learn new techniques. While in Europe, he sold many paintings and painted several murals.
Luis Alberto has exhibited in more than 200 galleries and has painted large murals for renowned hotels and businesses in Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. His art is in high demand there among wealthy art collectors and tourists alike. In addition to painting, engraving, sculpting, carving, and serigraphy, Luis Alberto is also a gifted guitarist.

Yummy News from the Red Canoe Bookstore Cafe (in the heart of Lauraville 21214)

Yummy News from Nicole, owner of the Red Canoe Bookstore Cafe:

Well hello everyone!

Cranberry chocolate chip with orange flavored icing? Peach cobbler? Apple and mango and toasted pecans? Sounds like muffins at Red Canoe. Yup. Fresh, wholesome, delicious. And if you missed today’s muffin moment try our hand rolled pizza for lunch. Traditional or not. With sausage and marinara or with figs, blue cheese and bacon. Or another delightful and surprising combination of flavor and texture.

The real key is serving food that is fresh and made to order – right here in the heart of Lauraville where you can always find good books and coffee and some great neighbors.

See you later,

Update on the Hamilton Elementary/Middle School Garden Partnership with Hamilton Crop Circle

Update on the Hamilton Elementary/Middle School Garden Partnership with Hamilton Crop Circle

With summer here and temperatures soaring, lawns across the city will soon be scorched and brown. However, Hamilton Elementary/Middle School will display a lush, green lawn and garden thanks to a new, state of the art rainwater capture system and rain garden.

Today, Hamilton is home to a beautiful community garden that was cultivated in partnership with the community-led Hamilton Crop Circle. Over 3,500 square feet, the garden produces tomatoes, corn, beets, carrots, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, and other fruits and vegetables. Three local restaurants, the Chameleon Café, Hamilton Tavern, and Clementine serve the food to their customers. In October 2010, the Parks and People Foundation nominated Hamilton for Outstanding Schoolyard Garden, for its commitment to environmental education.

This system will provide clean water to the entire school garden and campus green area. Featured is a three-ton boulder, which emits clean, drinkable water from underground water tanks.

The school uses the garden for many academic activities.

· A time-lapse photography system is installed in the garden so children can track the growth of the plants.

· Arthur Morgan, one of the founders of the Hamilton Crop Circle, teaches gardening two days a week to the students.

· Morgan teaches the students about plants, insects, the environment, composting, and sustainability.

· Morgan and the children tend to the garden by planting, seeding, weeding, mulching, and watering.

Overall the garden instilled a sense of pride in Hamilton students, parents and neighbors in regard to the school. It is often hard to infuse children with a love for learning, but the garden at Hamilton has done just that. Students are now eager and enthusiastic to learn more about their garden and all of its different facets, including the math and science they learn while gardening.

These activities will prepare you for the sessions in the afternoon where your discoveries will be developed into scenes on stage.

During the second part of your day, Playwright Mark Scharf will help you build on what you’ve created
in the morning to create clear, effective, playable scenes that work on stage. In doing so, Mark will introduce you to the craft of Playwriting by exploring structure, character and dialogue and by using techniques employed in the writing of plays such as settings, images and objects, metaphors, characterizations, objectives and negotiations.

The Charm City Craft Mafia has announced Pile of Craft, an indie and alternative craft fair featuring a wide array of the country’s best crafters, will take place on June 25th from 10 AM to 5 PM at St. John’s Church, located at 2640 St. Paul St, Baltimore, MD 21218.

Shoppers at Pile of Craft will delight in finding one-of-a-kind, handmade gifts from over 65 vendors, juried from applicants nationwide. Local crafter favorites include Bowerbox Press, City Sparrow, Cotton Monster, Found Studio, illegible ink, MeepCraft, Phampersand Press, Pink Kiss Pottery, Red Prairie Press, Spaghetti Kiss and Sugar Paperie. For a full list of vendors, information on the fair and more information on the Charm City Craft Mafia and its talented members, please visit http://www.charmcitycraftmafia.com.

In addition to checking out the vendors, please visit Carlybird Weaves’ ongoing demo with handwoven cuffs, scarves and cloth for your body and home as well as hear what one of our craftastic idols, Hello Craft, is up to. You’ll also want to commemorate your Pile of Craft experience with a stop at the Anneka Photo Booth!

All the great work available for your viewing pleasure and purchase will clearly make you hungry, so make sure you step outside to the curb and visit Baltimore food truck phenom, Curbside Café, and enjoy their famously fresh burritos!

You can join the Charm City Craft Mafia in helping Baltimore Clayworks by purchasing a raffle ticket (or three!) at Pile of Craft. One lucky person will win a huge basket filled with a collection of handmade goods from many of our super talented vendors! All money raised from the raffle will be donated to Baltimore Clayworks, and the more money we can raise, the more potters’ wheels will spin, kilns will fire, and educational and collaborative programs in ceramic arts are able to take place.

The Charm City Craft Mafia is an organization that promotes independent artists, designers, craftspeople and businesses in the Baltimore region. Our collective of artists is committed to educating the greater community through the sharing of our skills and knowledge. Help protect the old Hamilton Library from demolition

HLMS has requested from CHAP (Baltimore City's Commission For Historical & Architectual Preservation ) a "special list" protection for the old Hamilton Library at 3006 Hamilton Avenue.  The new owner of the property recently filed for demolition permits.  A hearing was scheduled for June 14th, but now has been postponed until further notice. We are requesting that concerned neighbors write a letter to CHAP to save the building from destruction.

Charmed Life Studio is proud to present Volume One the first gallery show by the Logo Pimp of Lauraville, Todd Brizzi. If you live in Baltimore and have eyes, then you have probably seen work by the Toddfather. It’s quite possible that you have some of his work in your house right now. Because everybody loves Todd, we’ve decided to do something special for his opening, our first Art Opening Barbecue. July 2nd, 4:00PM to 10:00PM we will have grilled meat, cold beverages and live music. As always, this event is free and fun for all ages.

Todd’s interest in graphic design began early. His father worked for an advertising company in New Jersey. “My dad took me to work and they had these books of paste-ups. You had to take scissors and cut these graphics out and paste them onto your work. As a kid I thought that was the coolest.” He graduated from MICA with a BFA in 1991 and immediately started working in the video game industry. Early in his career Todd hand rendered graphics for MicroProse Software, working on titles such as Civilization and 1942: Pacific Airwar. His early years in the game industry taught him to work with limited resources, such as a 256 color palate. By the mid-nineties, Todd had moved to working on military flight simulators for EA. At this point, the work had become more technical in nature and rather procedural. “The early years in the game industry were very free. It taught me that nothing was permanent; everything could be changed with the click of a mouse”..

Todd began doing freelance graphic design for local rock band The Tombs. His flier and T-shirt work appeared all over Baltimore. His most ubiquitous work came in 2005 when he designed the logo for Zeke’s Coffee. In 2008 Todd stopped working for the video game industry and began doing freelance design work. His work includes almost every logo in Northeast Baltimore, fliers for local fairs, farmer markets, roller derby teams, schools, and just about anything else he can do. “A friend described my work as very masculine, and East Coast street. I’m not sure how street it is, but it is definitely not West Coast.” His logo work uses few colors and lines to create bold images. He is a master of font choice, frequently manipulating existing fonts and occasionally creating his own. His poster work combines those elements with an impeccable sense of placement and flow. Todd’s work is influenced by comic book artists Charles Burns and Robert Crumb. He is also inspired his friends, especially Hungry Knife Collective founder Guy Sparger, and tattoo artist George “Fudgie” Dobbs.

Todd Brizzi lives in Northeast Baltimore, where he and his wife raise triplets. When he isn’t drawing Ganesh or keeping three kids in line, he works as a Master Coffee Roaster for Zeke’s Coffee. His art can be seen at: www.facebook.com/pages/Toddfather-Art/123415444398926

June 5th, 2011 Harford Road in Hamilton Downhill Derby and more...

A reminder that Harford Road will be closed on Sunday for the 2nd Indie 900' Downhill Derby. The road will close at 7:00 a.m. The race takes place from 10 - 3, and the road will re-open shortly after. Gibbons Avenue will be open to traffic on the southern border; White Avenue will be open to traffic on the northern border. Buses transportation will be diverted.

If anyone is up for volunteering to help set up for the race, you will be very welcome. (Please come by when you can, but many volunteers will be there at 7:00 a.m.) Some of the events include a mural painting in the intersection of Hamilton Avenue & Harford Road, led by Whitney Frazier, a visit by the Grand Prix (hopefully, but not looking promising) and the soap-box style race. We expect a large group to attend and realize this could impact parking in your neighborhood. We will try to minimize that to the best of our ability and have arranged for numerous "free parking" areas.

Thank you!
