Nathaniel K. Gibbs (b. 1948) graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, Maryland and began his artistic endeavors as a fine arts major at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He continued post-graduate studies at the Schuler School of Fine Arts, and became interested in the painting techniques of “Old Masters” while studying under the highly regarded master of realism, Joseph Sheppard of Baltimore. In 1981, Gibbs earned a master’s degree in fine arts from the American University in Washington, D.C.
Gibbs’ work demonstrates his distinguished quality in classic representational art influenced by Diego de Silva Velazquez, Leon Bonnat and John Singer Sargent. His personal preference in subject matter is vast ranging and includes his original images of the buffalo soldiers of the civil war, as well as figurative composition, landscapes, still life and city scenes. His commissioned portraits of the former Mayor Clarence “Du” Burns, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X and Abel Wolman have been added to the art collections of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore City Hall and Banneker Douglass Permanent Collection.
